Starting October 6th, a skull will adorn the rear side of Venlo’s City Hall. This sculpture is the first work of art in the new series of the De Nis project. ‘Ecce Homo Erectus ’, as the work is titled, has been created by the British artist duo Shaun Doyle and Mally Mallinson.

‘Ecce Homo Erectus’, says the neon sign at the City Hall’s façade. ‘Behold the upright man’. Having read these words, the observer might shrug and walk on. ‘Look at me!’ the ochre-coloured skull on the back seems to shout at passers-by, who will raise their head and stare directly into large, hollow eye-sockets. They are looking at their ancient history: the skull refers to an evolutionary ancestor of modern man.
